Teach in Bulgaria and NGOs issued a statement against the ‘LGBTI propaganda’ amendments in education law

On 8 August 2024, a group of MPs submitted a draft law proposing significant amendments to the Law on Pre-School and School Education. This draft law introduces sanctions, including deprivation of the right to exercise a profession, for promoting or inciting non-traditional sexual orientations and/or gender identities within the educational system. The proposed Article specify the prohibition of “propaganda, promotion, or incitement in any way, directly or indirectly, of ideas and views related to non-traditional sexual orientation and/or gender identity other than the biological one.”

In response, 20 non-governmental and civil society organizations, including Teach in Bulgaria, have issued a joint statement opposing the draft law. The Bulgarian Diversity Charter strongly supports the statement. We join their collective denouncement the adoption of such a law, arguing that it is not only unconstitutional but also sets the stage for fundamental rights violations. Such legislation increases the risk of discrimination, intolerance, marginalization, and violence against LGBTI young individuals. We stand committed to advocating for a more inclusive and equitable educational environment.
